In 106 CE, widowed Cassia and her six-year-old son travel to the ancient city of Petra, her deceased husband's birthplace, anticipating the discovery of hope and feeling of home with his family. What Cassia finds instead is a royal secret, a queen with a thirst for power, and a burgeoning religion called the Way, whose disciples are often killed by lions for sport. This edgy story about the lives of the early Christians puts into perspective the sacrifices made and the strength of the faith that the first believers drew on as they endured persecution under the Roman yoke. VERDICT Higley (City on Fire; So Shines the Night) has written another eye-opening historical novel with meaningful characters and an evocative background. Recommended for fans of Tosca Lee's biblical fiction and Bodie and Brock Thoene's "A.D. Chronicles" series.
