Isabella - I am Regina By: Isabella One of my favorite books is I am Regina by Sally M. Keehn. There once was a peaceful family, the Leininger family. This family came from Germany. They came for freedom and moved to Pennsylvania. There are two sisters who are very close their names are Barbara who is older and Regina who is the youngest. On a cold cloudy day, their mother and one of their brothers went to get corn milled. The other brother and the father were outside. Then during lunch, unexpected visitors came to the house. I won’t spoil what happens next. That is what you figure out. My favorite part is when Regina tells children stories about the man of God. It is my favorite part because the kids were listening very closely, and Regina felt happy. I recommend this book to people who like to read and are ready for anything. Don’t read the back. It gives it away. This book is in the historical fiction genre. I love that it takes place during the French and Indian War. It is also based on real facts.

April 29, 1991
Ten-year-old Regina tries to be brave when she hears stories of the bloody French-Indian war that is making its way toward her family's farm in colonial Pennsylvania. One day her worst fears are realized: while her mother is off on an errand to town, her home is attacked by Indians. Her father and brother are killed, and she and her sister are taken captive and divided as property among the warriors. Regina is indoctrinated into Indian society, given a new name and gradually adopts the Indian way of life--and as the years pass she begins to wonder if her life with her family was just a dream. Raw and sensitively written, this well-researched account of a factual story neither shies away from the horrible truths of war nor sentimentalizes its emotional content. With a simplicity that echoes Regina's character, Keehn's prose is immediate and fresh, and transports the reader into this poignant narrative. Ages 12-up.
