DEBUT Presser grew up hearing stories about his grandparents' experiences during the Holocaust that became family lore, but after their deaths, he discovered much had been hidden. In this first novel, the author uses techniques reminiscent of W.G. Sebald, among them the inclusion of photographs, newspaper articles, and letters, to piece together their experiences in Czechoslovakia, Auschwitz, Theresienstadt, and Melbourne, Australia. The novel moves back and forth between fictionalized reenactments of events and autobiographical accounts of the author's travels to Yad Vashem in Israel, the Red Cross International Tracing Service in Germany, sites in Czechoslovakia, and concentration camps in Poland. His ultimate quest is to find archival corroboration of his grandfather's role in Eichmann's Museum of the Extinct Race. Like Sarah Wildman in her nonfiction account Paper Love, Presser is concerned with uncovering the truth about his grandparents' lives and preserving their voices before it is too late. VERDICT Recipient of Australia's 2018 NSW (New South Wales) Premier's Literary Awards for fiction, new writing, and people's choice, this work will appeal to those interested in historical fiction, the creative mix of nonfiction and autobiography in novelizations, and recent publications from Down Under.--Jacqueline Snider, Toronto
