No one else writes like Kelman (Dirt Road, 2017) or tells the kind of stories that he does.Yes, he often writes about Scotland and its working class, but his tales are universal and timeless as he places the Scottish experience on a global platform. In his latest collection, Kelman writes about ordinary men and women caught up in ordinary and sometimes not so ordinary life, portraying truckers, principals, writers, and musicians in stories brief and lengthy. Kelman is a master of the inner voice; most everyone lives inside their heads in his stories. For example, we get to know the mind of Andy, the main character in the first story, as he lies in bed next to his partner, Fiona. Kelman's characters oftentimes don't say that much to other people, but they live a rich, vibrant, interior life as they muse about the state of the larger world and about their own. Once again, Kelman brings the light of literary excellence and philosophical insight to the dark of human concerns.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2018, American Library Association.)
