In this pleasing paranormal, Baker (Tall, Dark, and Deported) creates an Indiana refuge where architect Adrian Rothschild must come to terms with his belated transformation into a werewolf and an unforeseen bond with clinical psychologist Tate Lewis. Adrian has gradually gotten used to being the isolated human scion of a formidable werewolf pack, so it’s a shock when he begins to experience the Turn, eight years late. Camp H.O.W.L. counselor Tate, assigned to help Adrian through his physical and mental changes, is taken aback by the instant tenderness and sexual attraction between them. Tate’s abusive childhood led him to fear intimacy, so he must overcome serious qualms before he and Adrian can consummate the relationship they both want. Complicated familial problems potentially engendered by Tate and Adrian’s relationship unfortunately remain off the page while the duo explore their bond within the camp’s confines. The story will satisfy readers who want large helpings of emotional processing, likable characters, and offbeat humor.
