The protagonist of Zimler's provocative new novel shares a name with a beloved friend of Jesus in the New Testament gospel of John. Like his scriptural counterpart, Zimler's Lazarus has astonishingly come back from the dead. But readers will quickly recognize stunning differences between the two. For while John's Lazarus appears in a sacred narrative stressing the divinity of Jesus, the long-awaited Christ, Zimler's Lazarus considers those proclaiming their faith in Jesus as the holy Messiah dangerously deluded. Yes, Zimler's Lazarus recognizes spiritual gifts in Jesus (Yeshua in Zimler's linguistically sophisticated fiction). A visionary resistant to political and ecclesiastical oppressors, Zimler's Jesus illuminates Lazarus' days with gnomic poetry and elevates his nights with mysterious dreamland visits. Yet Zimler's Lazarus sees in Jesus a man of mortal limitations, limitations evident even in his struggles to comprehend Lazarus' unexpected return from the tomb. Readers professing Christian convictions are likely to find the novel offensive, but Zimler's literary artistry?highly original and finely nuanced?is undeniable and will surely resonate with many readers of literary fiction, especially those familiar with the author's previous works, including The Last Kabbalist of Lisbon (1998).(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)
