It's December 1968, and African-American sleuth Cassandra Perry, hot-tempered, willful, and sassy, is seeking to find out who murdered two of her commune roommates-one black male, one white female-in an empty apartment on Chicago's North Side. The police suspect several of their other hippie friends, including a white marijuana supplier and a missing Pueblo Indian who was a former lover of the white victim. Cassandra gets help from her one-time underworld-connected great-uncle, who in turn enlists a detective insider. Hippie lifestyles, free love, drugs, and antiwar demonstrations surround this gutsy heroine in her second adventure (after Jackson Park) which also features focused prose, frigid at mosphere, fanciful plot. Fans of Carter's Nanette Hayes series and readers interested in the 1960s will enjoy. Carter lives in New York City.
