Seventeen-year-old Junebug Host is blessed with "the most stable mother in America," at least by default. For more than two-thirds of Junebug's life, her mother, a literal ax-murderer, has been incarcerated at a Nebraskan prison. After a stunning revelation about the crime, Junebug's idle fantasies about setting her mother free deepen to an obsession and culminate in an abortive prison break. Though the bare-bones plot suggests high drama, this is no mother-daughter " Thelma and Louise; " McCoy seems most interested in defining Junebug's quirky perceptions, evoking the midwestern landscape ("a hula world of endless grasslands"), and, one suspects, exercising her pyrotechnical creativity, especially apparent in the relentless repurposing of nouns as verbs ("the skirt shrinkwrapped my thighs"; "she goddessed her way through the garden"). Though the showy language can be distracting, Junebug's wrenching struggles to manage her pain are touching, and a concluding breath of optimism offers reward for readers who persevere through the novel's more inscrutable moments.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2004, American Library Association.)
