There is good reason to believe that contemporary America's favorite poet is Rilke, though he never saw this country and died almost 80 years ago. Translations of his poems never fail to arouse the greatest interest, and his words are frequently heard at weddings and other ceremonies of passage. Kohn has retranslated Rilke's fictional response to his reading in Russian Orthodox folk spirituality, and the result is fluent and engaging. For most collections.
