In Andrew Fox's zany Bride of the Fat White Vampire, the uneven sequel to Curse of the Fat White Vampire (2003), quarter-ton vampire Jules Duchon must first change back from his current form of 200 white rats in order to play detective, but in so doing a vital organ goes missing. The New Orleans setting helps redeem a plot with too many surprises not suggested beforehand and incongruously peaceful, if not happy, resolutions to bloody conflicts. Agent, Dan Hooker. .

Jules Duchon of Fat White Vampire Blues is back, bigger than ever. When last seen, the unhappy vampire had changed himself into 200 white rats, living on restaurant refuse and hiding in storm drains. Now the snobbish vampires of the High Krewe need Jules's intimate knowledge of New Orleans's seedy brothels, low-life taverns, and trash-strewn alleys. A fiend has mutilated two beautiful female vampires, and only Jules has the expertise to find this creature. Doodlebug, Jules's cross-dressing pal, transforms his friend back to his normal fat form. Jules agrees to do the job for the High Krewe but wants something for himself: the return of Maureen, the vampire woman he loves who was transformed to dust a few months earlier. Everyone looks to Doodlebug to find a way to accomplish the impossible. A wonderful cast of extraordinary but believable characters-human and vampire-populate this witty novel. The story's leisurely pace reflects the laid-back ways of the Big Easy. Recommended for fiction collections.-Patricia Altner, Information Seekers, Columbia, MD

After vampire Jules Duchon, hero of " Fat White Vampire Blues " [BKL Ap 15 03], lost the love of his afterlife, Maureen, he transformed himself into 187 white rats, hoping to escape his pain. Now his old cohort, Doodlebug, who desperately needs Jules' help, has tracked down and reassembled all but one rat, and the missing one contains a crucial piece of equipment. The leader of the High Krewe of Vlad Tepes, New Orleans' most exclusive vampire group, has ordered Doodlebug to track down the person responsible for maiming several younger High Krewe vampires. Motivated in part by Doodlebug's promise to try to resurrect Maureen, Jules does agree to help. The case intensifies when Jules discovers a link to the black vampire group he previously butted heads with. But the black vampires are upset by the deaths of several pastors, and it appears that someone may be targeting both groups of vampires. Fox follows up Jules' first adventure with more laugh-out-loud vampire exploits and fun. (Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2004, American Library Association.)
