Dr. Kendra Hamilton returns to Dunhill County, California, to complete unfinished business with Luke Bertrand, a serial killer who murdered her mother and preyed on Dunhill County's weakest. His wealth and social position allowed him to skirt justice, and Kendra left town devastated. She moves into the Pit, a rough neighborhood, and befriends Leroy and his daughter, Anna, an amazingly beautiful woman with the IQ of a seven-year-old. Kendra assumes legal guardianship when Leroy loses custody, and Anna settles into the local residential care facility, Brighton House. In the first months, Anna is mistreated, and Kendra is faulted. Kendra reaches out to the only person she can trust, her ex-lover and former homicide detective, Richard T. Marvel. Kendra is convinced that Luke Bertrand is involved in what happened to Anna and pleads with Rich to prove it. Kendra and Rich become engrossed in an intense sleuthing-loving relationship investigating unfinished business of the past that quickly escalates into their present sanity and their future fate.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2005, American Library Association.)
