This new Western series from the coauthors of "Mail Order Bride", "Orphan Train", and the -Dreams of Gold - series chronicles the 1838 -Trail of Tears - in which 15,000 Cherokee Indians were forced by the U.S. Army to travel from North Carolina to what is now Oklahoma. Some 4000 people died during the six-month trek, which was marked by brutality, hunger, and disease. Along the torturous course, 18-year-old Cherokee Rose meets Lt. Britt Clairborne, who defends her people against their captors' harsh treatment. (He happens to be one-quarter Cherokee.) The couple develop a strong relationship that they hope will endure beyond the journey. What sets this novel apart from other Western romances is its attention to historical detail, which serves as underpinnings for the love story. Fans of Westerns and historical fiction will find this title enlightening and entertaining. Recommended for public libraries and regional collections. The authors live in Colorado.
