Seems like everyone in Chicago is crooked, and starry-eyed rookie patrolman Ray Weiss learns the cops are no exception when he's told to rob a jewelry store as part of his initiation onto the force in Edgar-winner Schwegel's fast-paced second crime novel (after 2005's Officer Down
). When Weiss breaks in, he finds the owner on the floor, shot dead. The discovery plunges him into a whirlwind of double-crosses, illegal immigration and coverups. Weiss's father is also a cop, but that makes unraveling the murder harder rather than easier. Weiss's need to prove himself holds him back from using his father's connections or asking advice. Readers who liked the sympathetic female characters in Officer Down
may be disappointed, as Weiss sees women mostly in terms of his chances of getting them into bed. It's hard to keep someone so oversexed and error-prone from becoming either slapstick or annoying, but the genuinely intriguing story leaves no time for impatience or disengagement. Author tour.

This is Edgar Award winner Schwegel's second novel (after "Officer Down") to look at the inner workings of the Chicago police department. In this outing, rookie officer Ray Weiss struggles to make sense of the pressures he encounters while learning that all is not as it seems in his precinct. Ray joined the force because he admired his father, an upright and respected Chicago police lieutenant. To his dismay, Ray finds that, among the older officers in his precinct, a rookie must prove he is willing to be "one of them" by participating in robberies set up by the older officers. When the robbery Ray commits includes a dead body and leads to the arrest of a man Ray knows is not guilty, he is drawn into a maelstrom of dishonesty and divided loyalties. In the end, he must decide which type of police officer he will be, honest or corrupt. This is an engaging if not entirely original look at the dark side of police work. Recommended for public libraries. [This will be excerpted in St. Martin's paperback edition of "Officer Down".Ed.]Ann Forister, Roseville, CA
