In a departure from her Virginia Wine Country series (The Sauvignon Secret, 2011), former news correspondent Crosby introduces Sophie Medina, a photojournalist whose CIA-operative husband, Nick, has disappeared. Though she has no solid evidence, Sophie believes that Nick is still alive and that his disappearance is tied to an extremely lucrative oil discovery. With no leads in London, Sophie leaves the UK and returns to her native Washington, D.C. After being taunted by a Russian oil tycoon at a Faberg' egg exhibit at the National Gallery, Sophie is more convinced than ever that Nick is still alive and that the Russians know how to find him. That same night she overhears a conversation that leads her to believe that a U.S. senator and the Russian ambassador are involved in plans to assassinate a controversial Russian author with information about abuses in the region where a new oil reserve may have been found.
