These 13 stories share the theme of the hero still learning, whether in school, as an apprentice, or when the first adventure begins. The quality varies, although all the contributors are experienced authors capable of professional polish. One of the best entries is Esther Friesners Roomies, about a new arrival to the Royal Academy of Damsel Arts. Friesners wit has never failed before and doesnt now. Sherwood Smiths The Princess, the Page and the Master Cooks Son is also well done, as is Vera Nazarins fable, Three Names of the Hidden God, and G. Scott Huggins Giantkiller, an amusing spy-story takeoff.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2007, American Library Association.)
