Continuing the chronicles of the Malazan Empire, Esslemont (Stonewielder) spins a tale of adventure and history that is both weighty and electrifying, both breakneck and intricate, and filled with plenty of familiar faces as well as a host of new players. In southern Genabackis, the city of Darujhistan is skirted by dry, dusty plains where immense treasures are said to be ripe for the picking. Scholar Ebbin is one of those who traverse that waste, looking for historical gewgaws for his research into the fabled Darujhistan Imperial Age. As the Darujhistani rulers manipulate a war between the nearby Moranth and Seguleh peoples, Ebbin stumbles across an artifact that could change the fate of the entire continent. Subplots too dense to summarize will make sense only to longtime fans, but those familiar with the series will find this a worthy and satisfying installment. Agent: Helen Edwards, Transworld,

Fantasy fans who have followed the evolution of the Malazan world as depicted in the novels of cocreators Steven Erikson and Ian C. Esslemont will welcome Esslemont's fourth entry in his Malazan Empire series. This chapter in the ongoing saga is set primarily in Darujhistan, City of Blue Flames, but myriad complex tangential stories taking place in other areas are interwoven into the narrative. Readers unfamiliar with the intricacies of the Malazan universe will have a difficult time keeping up with the multitude of characters, many of whom have appeared as peripheral figures in other Malazan books, and should probably be advised to begin with Erikson's 10-volume Book of the Fallen series before tackling any of Esslemont's offshoots. On the other hand, Malazan junkies will feast on this latest offering.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2012, American Library Association.)
