Auchincloss has been writing brilliantly about New York's wealthy socialite class for many years now, and this elegant new collection of short fiction continues his unflinching examination. The world depicted here is one of old money in which appearance and social status are everything and social climbing is the sport of choice. For all the privilege and monetary advantage they enjoy, however, most of the characters end up living tragically compromised lives. Many of the stories focus on marriage, and Auchincloss shows us again and again how the naïve and well intentioned are routinely betrayed by the ambition and selfishness of others. In Her Better Half, for example, Evalina is betrayed by her philandering husband, but she returns home to him nonetheless, partly out of a sense of duty, partly because she has nowhere else to go. Auchincloss has brought this fascinating, merciless world vividly to life. Enthusiastically recommended.Patrick Sullivan, Manchester Community Coll., CT
