Werewolves clash with legends in the harrowing and beautiful third novel (after 2009's This Crooked Way) detailing the epic travels of enchanter Morlock Ambrosius. Following a string of bad luck, Morlock is incarcerated in the werewolf fortress of Vargulleion. He kills a fellow prisoner in self-defense and gets a new cell mate, the werewolf Rokhlenu, whose life Morlock had previously saved. As their friendship slowly matures, Morlock battles the paranoia and wild rages caused by the glass spike hammered into his skull to block his Sight. When Morlock and Rokhlenu escape from prison, they find their troubles are just beginning. Enge's elegant prose perfectly captures Morlock's terse and morbid nature, which thrives in the vicious, honorable werewolf nation. Numerous intimate, complicated, and contentious relationships provide depth and gravity to the grim tale, which will enthrall fans of the dark and sinister.

The sorcerer Morlock Ambrosius travels north in his wanderings and falls prisoner to a society of werewolves in the city of Wuruyaaria, a democracy in name but not in practice. Befriending a fellow prisoner, Morlock becomes a key player in a battle between warring factions and leaves behind a legacy even he does not fully understand. The third novel in Enge's series detailing the events in the life of Morlock Ambrosius (Blood of Ambrose; This Crooked Way) offers an unusual portrait of werewolves with their own distinct language and culture, as well as superb storytelling. VERDICT Series fans and readers who enjoy epic fantasy will look forward to this title.
