Spring Remains

In the first chapter of Kallentoft’s absorbing fourth thriller featuring Insp. Malin Fors (after 2012’s Autumn Killing), a bomb that explodes in front of a Linköping, Sweden, bank kills two six-year-old twin girls and seriously injures their mother, Hannah Vigerö. A group called the Economic Liberation Front claims responsibility for the attack, purportedly to draw attention to the evils committed by banks. As the investigation expands, Malin and her police team must consider whether the bomb was instead targeted to kill specific individuals—perhaps the head of a local biker group, the Vigerö family, or someone else entirely. Meanwhile, Malin, who has just buried her mother, is struggling to maintain her sobriety, which she earned at a rehab center she was forced to attend after being caught driving under the influence.
