This WWII saga follows French perfumer Danielle Bretancourt as she pulls herself back from the brink of complete devastation. Her son and mother-in-law have been driven from their home in Poland by the Nazi occupation, her husband is killed while working as a British spy in German forces, and her family in France is put in jeopardy by her brother's efforts in the Resistance. She immigrates to Los Angeles with her grief-ravaged mother, infant daughter, and young niece. Nearly penniless, she uses her knowledge of fashion and perfumery to launch her own business, becoming a designer for Hollywood starlets. But she is haunted by her lost son and by a star-crossed love with an English captain. Moran, the author of the encyclopedic Fabulous Fragrances I (1994) and Fabulous Fragrances II (2000), blends history, passion, some melodrama, and her expertise in the art of perfuming in a novel that gives fans of romantic sagas a compelling voice to follow.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
