In these tough economic times, many Americans are seeking nontraditional forms of employment, often in the form of freelance work. Freelance writers D'Agnese and Kiernan (coauthors, "Signing Their Lives Away: The Fame and Misfortune of the Men Who Signed the Declaration of Independence") address financial planning for such circumstances. The authors describe how one can maximize financial security without compromising success by addressing debts, taxes, emergency funds, and retirement savings using their "Freelance Finance System." They preach commonsense ideas such as accountability and restraint but also describe plenty of clever ways to make one's money go further. They also provide tables for tracking financial information and goals and include lists of helpful financial web sites. The end of each chapter includes a convenient list of portablesconcepts that should be emphasized and activities designed to get people closer to their financial goals. VERDICT Developed from the personal experiences of the authors, this book is fun and relevant, with no other recent work quite comparable. Recommended for anyone who is self-employed now or is facing a new work-life situation.Poppy Johnson-Renvall, Mesalands Community Coll. Lib., Tucumcari, NM
