Muschamp (19472007) was one of the most engaging writers on the subject of architecture in the late 20th century. He was a gay, Jewish man from Philadelphia who moved to New York City and wrote primarily for "The New Republic, Artforum", and the "New York Times". He argued subjectively that we are all "individualistic, competitive, rootless, hungry, exhibitionist, [and] freakish" and that architecture expresses these needs as well as common, shared values. Muschamp's early participation in the Factory Group of Andy Warhol helped to formulate his awareness, sensitivity, and philosophy. This book reprints most of his writings, primarily consisting of 200 articles he wrote for the "Times" from 1992 to 2007. Unfortunately, there are no pictures, which will make it somewhat inaccessible to readers who are unfamiliar with the individual buildings and intellectual developments that Muschamp discusses. VERDICT For architects and those already familiar with architectural design and criticism, this book represents a pyrotechnic verbal tour de force.Peter Kaufman, Boston Architectural Coll.
