For most patients, an interaction with an anesthetist or anesthesiologist takes place at the time of surgery, a stressful occasion when information can be hard to absorb. The surgery has likely been the focus until that point, and it's common for patients and families just to nod as this new information is offered and then sign a consent form. Orebaugh (anesthesiology, Univ. of Pittsburgh) offers this consumer-oriented explanation of the various forms of anesthesia and pain control to provide information meant to aid in question asking and decision making for those with the time and interest. He covers general and regional anesthesia, reviewing the types available and the potential complications of each, then describes various forms of pain control that might be used postoperatively. A chapter is devoted to the needs of specific populations such as children, the elderly, women in labor, and those with sleep apnea. A few photo illustrations are included. VERDICT This clearly and concisely written guide is carefully structured to make important information accessible to those fortunate enough to have the time to plan ahead for surgery.--Richard Maxwell, Porter Adventist Hosp.
