Mohammed Bouazizi's December 2010 self-immolation in Tunisia set in motion tumultuous events throughout much of the Arab world, with mixed results. The Arab uprisings have had multidimensional causes and unique features in each country, but they all led to an unprecedented level of popular mobilization and political struggle against several ruling regimes. In this edited book, Lynch (director, Inst. for Middle East Studies, George Washington Univ.; The Arab Uprising), a specialist in the contemporary Arab world, has put together a number of thematic chapters by leading scholars to explain complex aspects of the revolts in the Arab region. The material is divided into three parts. In Part 1, the regional and cross-national qualities of the revolutions are examined. Part 2 analyzes the role of key figures, such as the Arab militaries, labor unions, and Islamist movements. The final part focuses on the role of public opinion, including the attitudes of youth in mobilizing popular movements against authoritarian systems. VERDICT This theoretically sound volume is one of the better books about the still unfolding phenomenon of Arab uprisings. Academics, journalists, and policymakers will benefit from the well-informed analyses offered.--Nader Entessar, Univ. of South Alabama, Mobile
