Most historians agree that France has often been a major driver of historical and cultural trends throughout European history. But Stovall, professor of French history at the University of California, Santa Cruz, goes much further. In his compact survey of modern French history, Stovall asserts that key political and cultural events and trends have had and continue to have universal influence and appeal well beyond Europe and the Western world. French Enlightenment thinkers inspired and continue to inspire intellectual ferment and political actions, including radical and revolutionary efforts. The French Revolution not only shattered the ancien regime in Europe; the ongoing effects can still be witnessed in efforts in the Third World to define the meanings of the nation-state and citizenship. During the second half of the nineteenth century, French achievements in philosophy, literature, and the visual arts made France the world center of modernity. Stovall's praise for and enchantment with France is sometimes over the top, but he does offer an engaging perspective on the nation and its citizens.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
