This stirring volume contains some of the most passionate, potent slave narratives ever to be published. Appearing in this collection are memoirs penned by well-known activists Nat Turner, Frederick Douglass, William Wells Brown, Henry Bibb, and Sojourner Truth. In addition, several powerful, evocative works by less celebrated writers are also featured. Of special note are the chronicles of William and Ellen Craft, a husband-and-wife team who escaped together to freedom, and of Harriet Jacobs, a slave subjected to both racial oppression and brutal sexual harassment. Together these 10 narratives paint a vivid portrait of the cruelties of the institution of slavery, serving as an eloquent testament to the essential dignity and tenacity of the human spirit. A significant contribution to the literature of the African American experience.
