Vaughan-Lee ("Love Is a Fire: The Sufi's Mystical Journey Home"), a teacher in the Naqshbandiyya-Mujaddidiyya Order of Sufism, here collects some of his more provocative writings. Sufism, neither well known nor well understood in the United States, is a mystical offshoot of Islam, sometimes called the inner dimension of Islam; especially in the West, it is often practiced with the loosest kinship to traditional Islam. Vaughan-Lee's insights mix modern psychology of a sort with mystical apperception. His sensitivity to spiritual experience and the poetry and psychology that illuminate it is engaging, but his work depends on the now-problematic and perhaps stereotypical notion that there are essential feminine qualities. VERDICT Although traditional gender-role assumptions slightly weaken this fascinating volume, it should be considered where the author's other books circulate.
