یوشع و پدربزرگش عاشق بودن با هم بودن بیش از هر چیز دیگری ماهیگیری را دوست دارند. اما پدربزرگ مریض میشه و خیلی وقته که تو بیمارستانه وقتی از خانه بیرون رفت، او و یوشع برای ماهیگیری دیگر با هم ماجراجویی می‌کنند و پدربزرگ به یوشع وعده داده است که همیشه نزدیک خواهد بود. پدر بزرگ می گوید: امروز من و تو مثل دو ماهی هستیم که در کنار هم در این دریاچه شنا می کنیم. وقتی من بمیرم همه چیز فرق میکنه من دیگه یه ماهی نمیشم، اما تبدیل به یه چیز بهتر میشم. عشق من مثل اب دریاچه خواهد بود. شاید فکر کنی که من با تو نیستم، اما ما از همیشه نزدیکتر خواهیم بود چون تو با عشق من احاطه میشی مدت‌ها پس از مرگ پدربزرگ، یوشع درک می‌کند که پدربزرگ به قولش عمل کرده است و عشق و خاطره‌اش از مرگ زنده می‌ماند. وقتی یوشع بزرگ شد و با دخترش برای ماهیگیری رفت، انچه را که پدر بزرگ به او اموخت به او اموخت: او می داند که ما هرگز نباید احساس تنهایی یا ترس کنیم؛ زیرا عشق ما را احاطه کرده است که تا ابد باقی می ماند. پدربزرگ می گوید: «هر خاطره مانند یک هدیۀ ویژه است که من می توانم ان را باز کنم. و این هدیه ای است که من می خواهم به شما هم بدهم. A boy loses his grandfather but comes to realize his grandfather's love never ends. Joshua's grandfather fills his life with wonder. Whether they're digging in the dirt or eating ice cream, it's always an adventure. But when Grandpa is admitted to the hospital, Joshua begins to understand the frailty of life. Happily, Grandpa is released, and once again the two are able to fish together. Only this time, Joshua finds he must ask the question percolating in his mind: whether Grandpa fears dying. In Grandpa's response, Aspinwall offers a series of beautiful similes, allowing even young readers to understand how love can continue even after a person has passed. While feelings of pain, betrayal, and anger are acknowledged, it is a warm, embracing, and unbroken love that remains. As Grandpa likens Joshua and himself to two fishes in the lake, he explains that when he passes he will then become the water that surrounds the fish with love, always present if Joshua just looks with his heart. Delicate pen lines, light shades, and subtle watercolor washes lend to the text's gentle approach to a difficult topic. A comforting and meaningful addition to stories about loss and grieving.
