In the second Watervalley novel (following More Things in Heaven and Earth, 2013), Luke Bradford is settling into the small Tennessee town where he agreed to serve for three years as the only doctor in exchange for having his medical-school debts paid. The growing cast of characters includes his housekeeper, Connie, and her irrepressible sister, Estelle, who wants to open a bakery in town; reclusive widower John Harris, who becomes a good friend; Ann Patterson, a traveling nurse who takes a job at the clinic; and Will Fox, a 12-year-old computer whiz who lives next door. The Fox family is under a cloud because of a murder that occurred back in 1940, and Luke is intrigued enough by Watervalley's only homicide to do some sleuthing. Also on tap is a budding romance between Luke and sixth-grade teacher Christine Chambers. Except for the fact that the pace is slower and the narrator is a 30-year-old-man rather than a 70-year-old woman, there are similarities with Ann B. Ross' Miss Julia series: a close-knit southern community, mildly quirky characters, a touch of mystery, and an easy-to-swallow dose of Christian faith.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2014, American Library Association.)
