Mentors--help or hindrance, it all depends. Carreau, an HR specialist, outlines from experience how mentoring often goes wrong or is just plain ineffective. She then focuses on ways young professionals can take charge of their own careers, because after all, who else will have your back more than you? Much of the narrative is common sense, but by putting her own spin on it, the author makes it fresh and useful. Time management and improving networking are key topics most of us can relate to, as well as her "4Cs" (Confidence, Communication, Commitment, and Competence). Improving these types of behavior patterns and life skills will help anyone manage both their professional and personal lives better. Other takeaways include negotiation tips for raises and promotions. Lastly, Carreau covers failure, resilience, and starting over--areas that affect almost everyone. VERDICT Overall, this practical and down-to-earth book focuses more on day-to-day skills and techniques than lofty philosophies or strategy, providing solid basic advice for those starting out or needing a boost.
