VERDICT A sprinkling of religious references keeps this title firmly within the inspirational camp, but the setting and Scott's attention to period detail make this refreshing romance a natural crossover for traditional Regency fans. Robert Devary, Marquess of Widmore, could run, but he can't hide. Vaughn Everard believes the marquess knows something about Vaughn's uncle death, and he is determined to wring the details out of the nobleman. The only problem is that, so far, the marquess has successfully eluded Vaughn. When Imogene Devary, the marquess' daughter, impetuously asks Vaughn to dance at a ball one night, it provides him with the perfect opportunity to finally arrange a meeting with the nobleman. All Vaughn has to do is pretend to court Imogene and wait for his chance. The only flaw in Vaughn's plan is that he doesn't expect Imogene to be equally determined to prove her father innocent. Scott (The Captain's Courtship, 2012) deftly integrates flawlessly researched period details and emotionally engaging characters into the captivating plot, making the latest installment in her Everard series an excellent choice for both historical-inspirational fans and readers who miss the old traditional Regency romances.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2012, American Library Association.)
