The ultimately tragic life of the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, who would become the mother of Kaiser Wilhelm, is the focus of this debut. At age seventeen, Victoria, the Princess Royal of England, is married to Fritz, heir to the Prussian throne, at a tumultuous period in German history, in a match that is based on both politics and genuine affection. United by their hope for a liberal, unified Germany, Vicky and her husband find themselves wading through the politically treacherous waters of the Prussian court, fighting the influence of the conservative Otto von Bismarck as well as claims that Vicky, as an Englishwoman, is more loyal to her native land than her adopted country. McHugh skillfully describes the intricacies of 19th century German politics, even if the level of detail occasionally proves a hindrance to the book's pacing, and her portrayal of Vicky is nuanced and appealing. This is a well-researched depiction of a determined woman whose story deserves to be more widely known; hand it to fans of Daisy Goodwin.Women in Focus: The 19th in 2020(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2020, American Library Association.)
