Following the discovery of Marbelite, a "quantum material bonded to our universe's subtle forces," Earth enters a period of prosperity, thanks in no small part to the Horizon Officers, a group of peacekeepers chosen to wield Marbelite weaponry that allows them to control Hard Heat, "an energy drawn from deep reality's molecular bonds." When a brilliant scientist forms a cult based on the belief that manipulating Hard Heat will eventually lead to Earth's destruction by a cosmic entity called the Undoer, Horizon Officer Brent Demm is called upon to intercede; one year later, Demm's shame at the disastrous outcome of that encounter is compounded when the Undoer is proven real. With only six days remaining before the planet is destroyed, Demm's ex-wife, Gayano, enlists his help in assembling a device she claims can stave off the apocalypse. If they're going to succeed, they'll need to battle a group hoping to monetize humankind's salvation, dodge bloodthirsty cultists, and learn to trust one another. VERDICT Orlando (Martian Manhunter: Identity) introduces a steady stream of heady sf concepts, perfectly suited to Ortiz's (Black Panther vs. Deadpool) lively, anime-inspired illustration.
