Grades 10-1 Omed and his best friend Zakir are Hazaras living in central Afghanistan. The Taliban is still in power, treating the Hazara like dogs and forcing them to take on dangerous jobs, such as working with explosives. After Zakir is killed in an accident, Omed reacts with a furious, foolish gesture that has horrific consequences: the Talibs cut out his tongue. Miraculously, he is bequeathed enough money to leave the country, and he heads for Australia, where he meets another boy who is also unable to speak. Many authors have written moving stories of young people in terrible circumstances. Australian writer Grant's third-person focus sometimes strays away from the two boys, an approach more typical of an adult novel with teen appeal than a YA novel. Strong readers, though, will appreciate the sophisticated telling, especially Grant's bracingly descriptive language, as when Omed arrives in Kabul on his way out of Afghanistan: People moved as though they were in a dream, carrying dirty water, suitcases, plastic limbs, guns. For younger readers, suggest N. H. Senzai's Shooting Kabul (2010).(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2013, American Library Association.)
