Never feeling fully satisfied with her career or expected life choices, travel writer Baker decides to head out on a big backpacking trip around South America (with seemingly little motivation or travel know-how) for what, she's not really sure. What the author describes as "travel humor" will keep some readers in stitches and eagerly turning the pages; others might find the constant misadventures and complaining a bit tedious. Full of continual and hilarious travel mistakes and many lessons, this volume might give future adventurers to South America tips and ideas, but it's more about the humorous tales of Baker's trip. Especially amusing (and appalling) is the inclusion of the ignorant advice from friends, family, and former coworkers (who clearly have never been to the area) about what to expect during her visit (Don't ingest anything given to you for free by a stranger, as they're trying to incapacitate you; watch out for men with dirty jewelry; they eat rats there). VERDICT Readers looking for a side-splitting travelog (that at times can be a bit raunchy) will enjoy this light read.--Cheryl Yanek, Brooklyn
