Ever dreamed of being in Ireland for St. Patrick's Day or imbibing an authentic stein of OktoberfestBier in Munich, Germany? Don't forget Brazil's Rio Carnival; the Tomatina festival in Buñol, Spain, one of the world's largest food fights; or India's harvest-time Holi festival, with its roots in Hindu myth. The Rough Guides editors have put out this fresh and hip guide to over 200 of our planet's celebrated events. The idea is not only to promote the motto "get out there and see the world" but to inform travelers about enjoying another country firsthand by participating in an authentic community event. Obviously, there are a few drawbacks to festival tourism; spiking accommodation prices, large crowds, and sold-out venues can discourage even the most avid attendee. For this reason, the editors suggest that any such trip be planned at least six months in advance. This book is fun for both the serious and the merely curious; its energy comes from the variety and richness of the cultural celebrations it covers.
