The titular Tyson is, of course, Mike Tyson, the controversial heavyweight boxing champion of the eighties and nineties. These days he's best known for a self-parodying role in The Hangover movies and, remarkably, for a star turn on Broadway. But when Tyson burst into boxing's consciousness in 1985, his hyperaggressive, fearless style propelled him to the WBC heavyweight championship at age 20, the youngest heavyweight champ ever. Despite the Hollywood elements of Tyson's backstoryimpoverished youth, tutelage from legendary trainer Cus D'Amatothere was always something a bit scary about Tyson. Working with veteran author Wilson, Holloway, a longtime member of Tyson's management group, tells an insider's story of Tyson's ups and downs (rape conviction, jail time, etc.). Portraying himself as one of the few suits in Tyson's employ who had the fighter's best interests at heart, Holloway charts an all-too-familiar pattern: financial shenanigans by promoters; legal problems; issues with women (taken to a new level by Tyson); fading skills; and, eventually, a fortune lost. Tyson has fallen further and come back stronger than most, and Holloway's take on the remarkable story makes terrific reading for fight fans.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2014, American Library Association.)
