Journalist Berlau's accessible debut delivers a unique perspective on George Washington (1732-99), centering on his business acumen. Berlau contends that Washington was an excellent businessmen whose financial decisions even extended to his marriage to wife Martha--not only did the union come with a sizeable dowry, but Martha herself played a fundamental role in managing the day-to-day operations at the couple's Mount Vernon home. Even readers familiar with Washington's military and political achievements may be surprised to learn about his innovations in agriculture (he bred the first mules), exports (he created the first branded food products and shipped them overseas), and distribution (Mount Vernon housed one of the earliest whiskey distilleries in the new nation). Other illuminating facts include Washington's advocacy for trademark protections, why wheat became an important cash crop, and how his early life as a surveyor influenced his real estate investments. VERDICT Recommended for those seeking new information about a Founding Father and students of American history.--Jacob Sherman, John Peace Lib., Univ. of Texas at San Antonio
