Fox’s passable sophomore effort (after 2018’s The Witch of Willow Hall) sits squarely in the gothic romance genre. In 1845, Gabriel Stone moves to Pale Harbor, Maine, in order to take the vacant position of minister. He’s still grieving the death of his wife, who died in childbirth a year prior, when he meets the mysterious and wealthy widow Sophronia Carver, who never leaves her home. The townsfolk believe she murdered her husband, and children claim she’s a witch. As Sophy and Gabriel become closer, strange events with similarities to Edgar Allan Poe stories threaten their burgeoning relationship and the wellbeing of the town. The inclusion of Poe elements elevates the typical “mysterious threats” plot, and Sophy is a strong gothic heroine. However, she’s diminished by the bland Gabriel, who falls for her a little too quickly considering his supposedly all-consuming grief. Fans of gothic romances will find this one capable but not exceptional.

A widowed minister with a secret past, a possible witch who may have killed her husband, and a connection to the dark tales of Edgar Allen Poe intertwine to create a fascinating novel set in small-town 1840s Maine. As unusual occurrences plague the village of Pale Harbor, fingers point at the eccentric young widow Sophronia Carver, rumored to be a witch who murdered her husband. Meanwhile, Gabriel Stone, the new minister in town, is grieving his wife's death and seemingly escaping a sordid past. When the two meet, there's an obvious connection, but the person behind the town's strange incidents seems intent on keeping them from being together. VERDICT Fox's (The Witch of Willow Hall) captivating writing style and well-developed characters draw readers back to a time when eerie and ominous happenings were the work of witchcraft. Anyone who enjoys romantic mysteries and witchy tales should pick up this title.--Sonnet Ireland, St. Tammany Parish P.L., Mandeville, LA
