Anglo-Irish divorce Kay Summersby, a driver for the British Motor Transport Corps, is assigned to Major General Dwight Eisenhower?Ike? in May 1942. Soon, her role expands. She becomes personal assistant, mixer of cocktails, partner at bridge and hostess of Telegraph Cottage, the place that served as Ike's headquarters and home. As the war progresses, and Ike is promoted up the ranks, she never leaves his side, and their shared life leads to gossip and innuendo. Back in Washington, Mamie Eisenhower learns of Kay's existence from a photo in Life magazine. Roosevelt and Churchill, however, appreciate Kay's role in helping Ike win the war. She thinks Ike is laying the groundwork to take her to the U.S. with him; if that fails, she fantasizes about a life in which he leaves the army and moves to England. It's not to be. A divorce could derail Ike's postwar career, and he sends her a letter ending the affair. Drawing from a number of sources, including Kay's memoirs, MacManus delivers a gets-the-job-done telling of an intriguing sidelight in WWII history and Eisenhower biography.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2018, American Library Association.)
