Rachel West has spent her entire adult life caring for her ailing mother. When her mother passes away after a long illness, Rachel begins to reevaluate things, particularly her choices to stay and care for her. She keeps coming back to the memory of her first love, Matthew, who left her to study at a university. Coincidentally, she soon receives an all-expenses-paid invitation to Matthew's wedding in Paris. Deciding a change of scenery would be good for her, Rachel takes off with best friend Sammy for the City of Light, along with their constantly warring neighbors. Rachel is able to breathe easier, working through her feelings for Matthew while finding companionship with an intriguing photojournalist. She isn't the only one who needs a breather, however. Sammy and her neighbors soon find that Paris might be healing for them as well. VERDICT A tender story of living through grief and regrets, with secondary characters who provide plenty of color. Recommended for women's fiction collections.--Brooke Bolton, Boonville-Warrick Cty. P.L., IN

Rachael West spent the last decade caring for her ailing mother and working on the family wheat farm. Meanwhile, her friends have gotten married and had families of their own. It's not until she overhears a conversation at her mother's funeral that Rachael wonders what she has missed out on. When she is invited to the wedding of an old boyfriend?one she has never gotten over?she accepts. However, the City of Lights has more to offer Rachael than just a wedding. Australian author Nash brings love, on many levels, to one of the most romantic cities in the world in her U.S. debut. She fills the story with beautifully vivid descriptions of Paris, eloquent French phrases, and the glamour of a high-end wedding. Readers will be transported to the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, and other well-known landmarks as Rachael's trip unfolds, all leading up to a shocking climax. The writing is beautiful, the story moving at an even pace with Rachael making various self-discoveries along the way. Perfect for those seeking a romantic read with some bite.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2018, American Library Association.)
