This "do-it-yourself biography" succeeds admirably in providing modern researchers and interested lay readers with a dynamic portrait of the private Kierkegaard (1813-55). Arranging the accounts of his peers, family members, student acquaintances, and many who remember him as an adult in their childhood into sections portraying the images he cast as schoolboy, university student, young writer, and seasoned intellectual, the editor has provided ample notes to aid the reader in understanding contexts, relationships, and other relevant background. While based on work begun nearly 20 years ago by Steen Johansen, a Danish archivist, this new work has more breadth and depth. Highly recommended for most collections.--Francisca Goldsmith, Berkeley P.L., Cal.
