Jesus states in the gospels, "You always have the poor with you." But the Bible also communicates that helping the poor is service to Christ and true religion. For several years, Lester has ministered to people experiencing poverty and homelessness. He now communicates their experiences to aid others in seeing the people behind the difficulties. One key theme is the importance of treating people with dignity regardless of their appearance, and not to equate poverty with laziness. The author also refutes misconceptions, explaining that people cannot simply escape poverty through hard work alone. Lester calls on Christians to view individuals through the lens of biblical truth and dignity by noticing, listening, and empowering. He cautions against one-size-fits-all approaches that do not allow for individual choices or affirmation. "These different needs can only be discerned by entering into a community and listening to the stories of the people who live there." Readers must learn to see the one lost sheep by actively looking, listening, and helping. VERDICT Those interested in the intersections of social justice and religion will both enjoy and be challenged by this work. Recommended for all libraries.--Ray Arnett, Anderson, SC
