Statistics state that nearly one in five U.S. parents outlive their children, and more than 100,000 under 40 die each year, creating a sizeable group who may be coping with bereavement. Beck (Stop Eating Your Heart Out), who has experienced the devastation of losing a child firsthand, here compiles stories from 27 parents who share their own journeys through the grief process. Organized into sections by the cause of loss--miscarriage, illness, accident, suicide, drug usage, and murder--the accounts are both raw and deeply personal, reflecting individual lessons learned on the path to healing without shying away from the myriad feelings involved in processing the death of a loved one. Resources for recovery, as well as insights from fathers, often less recognized in the literature, are highlights. VERDICT A helpful and perspective-giving tool for anyone who is wading through tragedy and in need of support and inspiration.
