Stein has written several books on women's spirituality, but there is no indication of her background in either conventional or alternative medicine. Part 1 of her book describes ten New Age and holistic healing methods; Part 2 describes 50 conditions and diseases and suggests remedies for them. Aside from a general bibliography, no references are cited in support of any of the author's claims. Some of her suggestions, e.g., taking megadoses of vitamins, pose dangers, while others, e.g., undergoing a hair analysis, do little but waste money. Her suggestions for emotional healing basically consist of feeling yourself as part of the "Goddess" and turning over your worries to her. One wonders how many women will find such suggestions useful. Only for libraries with comprehensive New Age collections.-- Natalie Kupferberg, Montana State Univ. Lib., Bozeman

Given the rising cost of health care and inadequate (or nonexistent) insurance coverage in the U.S., this is a must-read for women who "are refusing the cost, danger and invasive practices of standard medicine and are turning to natural healing." Stein has created an excellent reference on holistic/alternative healing methods, primarily for taking care of "small matters before they become large ones." Her book covers such topics as vitamins and minerals, herbs, acupressure, and naturopathy in easy-to-read, easy-to-use sections and includes a good bibliography and resources section referring the user to suppliers of both information and products. The AMA, however, will probably hate this book. ((Reviewed Apr. 15, 1992))(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 1992, American Library Association.)
