Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace is often selected on best book lists as the novel everyone must read. Russian literature scholar Kaufman (lecturer, Univ. of Virginia) agrees. To assist the common reader, Kaufman provides a practical guide to the 12 timeless themes found in the work and explains how they mirror contemporary life. He combines Tolstoy's diary entries detailing his quest for the truth with the motivations of the characters in the novel. Kaufman also identifies Tolstoy as an excellent teacher in spite of his complicated life; he says the point of War and Peace is not for readers to see who they are but to identify who they might become. For Kaufman, the novel asks readers to question whether their work enriches their lives or just their bank accounts. Kaufman is the Tolstoy expert for Oprah's Book Club. He admits that he has read War and Peace "maybe" 15 times. VERDICT Whether readers are picking up War and Peace for the first time or revisiting it, they will appreciate Kaufman's guidance through what he labels a "life-affirming" novel.--Joyce Sparrow, Kenneth City, FL
