Directed eastward, up in the hills of Los Angeles, the Hollywood sign has grown from a dilapidated real-estate billboard not unlike others of its time to an internationally recognized icon signifying stardom and new beginnings in the film capital of the world. But to understand the evolution of the sign, Braudy brings readers back further, to before film, when the land was lush and still smelled of orange blossoms. Soon enough, though, film arrived as well as the many studios, and stars like Charlie Chaplin and Fatty Arbuckle flocked to the area. And to draw others in, the sign was erected. As the industry grew, so did the signs presence, each one defining the other. Braudys account takes shape toward the end as his focus switches from anecdotal tales of Hollywoods infancy to the signs eventual significance in not just America but also the entire world. For readers who have caught sight of the landmark while wandering Los Angeles, this wont disappointa fine addition to Yale University Press Icons of America series.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2011, American Library Association.)
