Reference materials on the elite Japanese warriors with a legendary code of individual honor and pride are few and far between. The more than 100 entries in this robust work focus mostly on Tokugawa (1600-1868), the extended peace time presided over by Samurai warriors, though Sengoku (the Warring States period, 1467-1600) is also covered. Entries are arranged alphabetically, and there is also a listing of entries by topic and by timeline, from the introduction of the matchlock musket to Japan in 1543 to Emperor Meiji's promulgation of the Constitution of the Empire of Japan in 1889. Each entry provides detailed information in an accessible manner suitable for academics and general readers alike and includes a listing of resources for further reading. Black-and-white photographs and images appear throughout. The book concludes with more than 20 pages that provide detailed lists of primary documents along with a selected bibliography and index. This comprehensive collection of information on the history of Samurai will be a welcome addition to academic and public libraries.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)
