As the new guardian of a fatigue-clad, inwardly grieving 11-year-old girl, single and childless Merry Olson has her hands full: not only does Charlene, a.k.a. Charlie, seem not to like her, but inexperienced, naïve Merry is clueless when it comes to being a mom. Her only hope seems to be her wary but sometimes sympathetic neighbor, military code expert and divorced dad Jack MacMillan. But Jack is determinedly single and isn't about to get involveduntil an electric storm changes his plans. References to Cupid and Chaos add whimsical touches, while sharply drawn characters add depth to this well-written, emotionally rich story that explores some serious issues (e.g., grief, adoption) with humor and sensitivity and fairly simmers with sexual tension. Greene ("Blame It on Chocolate") is a Rita Award winner.

Over the years, free-spirited Merry Olson has had a number of different jobs and lived in a variety of places. But now that she has been named guardian of her best friend's daughter Charlene, Merry has a whole new set of responsibilities. She willingly gives up her freedom, determined to do her best to provide a stable home for serious Charlene, but nothing Merry does seems to work. Then Merry gets some unexpected help from her new, sexy next-door neighbor, divorced father of two sons Jack MacKinnon. RITA Award-winning Greene continues to demonstrate a rare gift for crafting emotionally satisfying contemporary romances that are both charmingly sexy and sweetly humorous.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2007, American Library Association.)
