This third volume of Waids tale of a Superman gone very, very wrong peels back the layers of the godlike Plutonians trauma and psychosis even as the dirty secrets of his former compatriots-cum-archenemies begin to surface. The demon summoned by the nations remaining military stirs the action pot, but its the human dramajet black though it isthat is so compelling here. Its not the ideal jumping-on point, but artists Krause and Barreto tag-team to provide gritty realism that grounds the story even as Waid proves there are still new tricks to be found in the Methuselah of the superhero genre.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2010, American Library Association.)
